Abbey tile

If someone would kindly answer me, I have an answer about the use of abbey tile (Abbey extension):
Does the abbey tile connect the adjacent farms or an abbey tile separate the farms between two cities ?

The Abbey seperates all adjacent fields, like it does with the adjacent cities or roads, if the segments are not connected otherwise by the other edges of the surrounding tiles.
